A VIN verification is a physical inspection of your car, truck, trailer or motorcycle. The VIN number, year, make, body type model (BTM), odometer and emissions label are documented on DMV form REG31. This is a process required in registering certain vehicles in California. 

The following are a few examples: 

• Registering an out-of-state auto, truck, trailer or motorcycle.
• You are changing your vehicle or trailer’s body type model (BTM). 
• You are changing the fuel type.
• To re-register a salvage or junk vehicle (salvage/junk revival).
• To make corrections to the year, make, odometer, VIN or body type model (BTM).

VIN verifications performed by the DMV or CHP are free, however, registration fees must be paid in full.
